RESOLUTIONS 2020/2021

Five resolutions have again been shortlisted for consideration this year.  Members are asked to vote for one and the numbers from each WI will be forwarded to our Federation for onward transmission to NFWI who will then collate numbers and advise which of these Resolutions has been chosen to go forward.  Fuller information will then be disseminated to WIs and members will be asked to vote in May 2021 as usual.  As the Annual Conference is planned for April 2021, the Resolution will not be voted on at Conference this time.

1.     A call to increase awareness of the subtle signs of ovarian cancer

2.     Stop women dying prematurely from coronary heart disease (CHD)

3.     Racism and Discrimination

4.     Now's the time to act!  Protect your nature space to create wildlife-friendly communities

5.     Stop the destruction of peat bogs to tackle climate change.

The voting results for Broughton Astley WI were as follows (26 members voted):-

A call to increase awareness of the subtle signs of ovarian cancer - 14 votes

Stop women dying prematurely from coronary heart disease - 8 votes

Racism and Discrimination - 3 votes

Stop the destruction of peat bogs to tackle climate change - 1 vote

The decision on which Resolution/s are to be taken forward will be advised by early February.  As the Annual Conference is to be held in April 2021, earlier than usual, voting will take place after that meeting in May.

RESOLUTIONS 2020

Five  resolutions were put forward for consideration this year:

1.  A call to increase potential stem cell donor registration

2.  Female crash test dummies

3.  End modern slavery

4.  Time to talk about death and dying

5.  Protect our precious helium

In February all WIs in every Federation took an initial vote and two of the proposed resolutions received a similar number of votes each and therefore these two were to be put forward for discussion and voting at the Annual Conference in June:

1.  A call to increase potential stem cell donor registration (38,280 votes), and

2.  End modern slavery (35,395 votes)

Due to the lock-down necessitated by the Corona virus pandemic the Annual Conference had to be cancelled.  A decision was to be taken at a Board Meeting in May on how to proceed further.

The Board of Trustees decided that in these exceptional circumstances, the results of the shortlist selection process will be used as a proxy for the Annual Meeting vote.  This means that the two resolutions have now been adopted by the WI and work will now be undertaken to take these issues forward.

The Public Affairs Department will be producing a range of educational and discussion materials over the coming weeks and months to allow members to consider the issues in more depth.

RESOLUTIONS BEING CONSIDERED FOR 2019

Six resolutions were put forward for consideration this year.

  1. Improving Plant Biosecurity
  2. Trees - improving the natural landscape
  3. Pelvic Floor Education
  4. Suffering in Silence - why we need to end the taboo around menstrual health
  5. A call against the decline in local bus services
  6. Don't Fear the Smear

27 members voted at our January meeting and 14 votes were received for Resolution 5 - preserving local bus services.  The NFWI will be collating all the votes received nationally and the chosen resolution will be discussed and voted on by WIs at their May meetings.  This chosen resolution will then be discussed at the annual meeting in June and where delegates will vote to accept or decline the resolution.

As a result of national voting, the two resolutions with the most votes were chosen to be discussed at individual WIs and results to be put forward to conference in Bournemouth in June.  These are

  • 1     A call against the decline in local bus services
  • 2     Don't Fear the Smear

These will be discussed at our May meeting and the results fed back to our link representative, who will take our votes to Conference.

At the June Conference, both resolutions were unanimously approved, and the NFWI will be working on ways to take both these issues forward in the near future.

RESOLUTION 2018

The resolution voted on by all WIs this year was "Mental Health Matters", that mental health should be treated in parity with physical health in the NHS.  (Broughton Astley voted unanimously at our February meeting to support this subject.) This was therefore put to the National Annual General Meeting in Cardiff in June and discussed in full.  The resolution was passed with a very large majority and the NFWI will be working towards raising the issue with Government and various relevant organisations in order to push forward for this parity.

RESOLUTIONS 2017

The two resolutions chosen for 2017 by all WIs voting on a choice of 6 put forward earlier this year, and the results collated nationally by the NFWI, are "Alleviating Loneliness" and "Plastic Soup - microplastic fibres in our oceans". Ms Fran Marsland and Mrs Julia Surfleet, our President, had attended a Resolutions Briefing meeting and presented relevant information at our May meeting for our members to vote.  The results will be passed to the NFWI and, depending on the numbers of votes received, both or one will be discussed at the Annual Conference in Liverpool in June.
