Our committee met in the garden of Mrs Sheila Phillips to discuss the restarting of our regular monthly meetings. Our hopes were dashed a couple of days later when the Rule of Six changed the scenario for permitted meetings!
MAY 2020
Our VE Day commemoration bunting is ready to display - when we can!
Pat and Derek celebrated the 75th anniversary of VE Day on the 8th May with a socially distanced street party. Residents had got together to provide every neighbour who had celebrated the actual day in 1945 with a delicious Afternoon Tea.
We are pleased to report that the flowering cherry tree planted to commemorate the centenary of the NFWI in 2015 survived the damage caused by vandals in 2018.

Broughton Astley WI supported Climate Change Awareness month with our Green Hearts bunting displayed on the railings by the brook in our village.

Jerry (short for Jerusalem) hedgehog came to visit with Colleen Powell.
Colleen brought lots of interesting and useful information about caring for the hedgehogs in our gardens!

Suffragette peg dolls and rosettes decorated our tree at the St Mary's Church Christmas Tree festival.

A small group enjoyed a Leicester City Walk, which traced the steps of some of our famous Leicester Suffragettes and told us some of their stories.
We laid our commemorative wreath of knitted poppies at the Broughton Astley memorial on Remembrance Sunday.
Wycliffe Group Annual meeting competition - Broughton Astley were awarded 1st place for our depiction of the well known saying "Looking for a needle in a haystack".
The depiction had to include a floral arrangements, and we chose a field and hedgerow theme appropriate to the time of year.

APRIL 2018 - OUR CENTENARY CHERRY TREE
In September 2015 we planted a flowering cherry tree to celebrate the Centenary of the formation of the WI. Present were Mrs Julia Surfleet our President (left), Mrs Hilda Nichols, our longest serving member, and Federation President Mrs Janet Kirk.
Visiting the tree in May 2017, we are pleased to report that it is well in leaf and flower!
We had an afternoon making some dolls according to the instructions in the recent WI Life Friendship edition with some attractive results!
One of our ladies made some knitted outfits instead!
On Broughton Astley Village Carnival Day - 24th June 2017 - we had a stall on the school field selling cakes and displaying a promotional table showing what we do as a WI and also giving information on the NFWI in general. We hope this will encourage some new members and we did have a number of visitors showing interest.
