Review of 2019

This year we celebrated our 65th Anniversary and 2019 turned out to be another successful year for Thorpe Acre WI.

Sue Wainwright was elected President last November, and we welcomed Julie Dale and Hazel Fisher to the Committee.

Our December meeting broke with tradition when Sue entertained us with tales of A German Christmas and we enjoyed Christmas nibbles with a German theme.  During the year we have enjoyed a Taste of India with Madhu, a talk about the canal boats run by the Peter Le Marchant Trust, learned a great deal about Waste Reduction and Recycling and the History of Palitoy.  Sue Wainwright took the Resolutions meeting in May and led the discussion the  topics for 2019 “A call against the decline in local bus services” and “Don’t fear the smear”.

We have tried our hands at spinning wool and seen the wonderful embroidery produced by prisoners.  We learned about the Ladies of Leicestershire and 150 years of Primary Education and then scratched our heads over Bob Neill’s Bits and Bobs last month.  We also had a thought-provoking short talk from Gwyn Jones about her experiences of dementia and the work of the Admiral Nurses.

A comprehensive list of our other activities over the year are on the “Other Things We Do” page.

The BIG NEWS now is that, after ten months of hard work, our intrepid darts team (pictured below) have won the 2019 Darts Competition, and will be presented with the trophy at the Annual Council Meeting in March.  The final was held against Great Bowden WI on 15th January and was a very close match.  The teams were level-pegging at 3 games each before the final deciding game when Thorpe Acre’s Jo Seddon played the winning dart.

Looking forward to 2020

We have loads of interesting plans for the coming year, including a daytime skittles match, greyhound racing evening, Baxtergate afternoon tea, another canal trip, fish and chips on the Great Central Railway and an outing to a local farm. We are also working on a Murder Mystery Evening.

There will be an outing to Tutbury on 16fh April for a cream tea and a talk in character from Lesley Smith, which we are very much looking forward to.

We also have two groups of ladies going to see the historic Mary Linwood Embroideries which are stored in Leicester.

If you would like to join us at any of our meetings, you would be made very welcome.  Please ring Linda on 01509 646708 if you need any further information.  Visitors are asked to pay £3.75 on the door, which covers the speaker, refreshments and a raffle ticket.
