2019
"Wigston Magna WI enjoyed an extra holiday this year when member Margaret James in September took us through a talk on her recent travels in China. After a complicated start involving a very thorough visa application, she started her many visits which included Beijing, Xi'an, a Yangtze cruise and Shanghai taking in Tiananmen Square, The Forbidden City, The Great Wall, Terracotta Warriors and many others along the way. All brought to life with the lovely photos she had taken.
Everything is on a massive scale. Population is very high and construction everywhere, although some primitive conditions sharply contrast with high-tech developments. Countryside poorer than the towns.
Her Guide informed her that the average Chinese person is very content as living conditions and standards have improved since the Chinese Revolution and despite everything being tightly controlled by the government and high police presence and security everywhere.
A very enjoyable and interesting evening".

WIGSTON MAGNA JUBILEE TREE...
.... all finished ....
...and here's the plaque to prove it.
On a very hot day, a few members of Wigston Magna WI set off for Peace Memorial Park in Wigston, complete with gardening gloves, sun hats and old shoes, in order to plant up a revamped shrub bed in the Park.
Members took particular pleasure in planting a young Gleditsia Sunburst tree for which they had sourced funding, and which is to be dedicated to the Diamond Jubilee celebration. (pictured left to right: Sherry, Margaret, Valerie, Marilyn, Margaret and Judy - delighted with a good morning's work done!!)
