Springbrook and Scraptoft W.I. decided to try Nordic Walking at their January meeting under the watchful eye of Penny Fielding, who regularly coaches a wide range of people in this sport. Penny explained that Nordic walking was classed as a high intensity but low impact sport which was good news for anyone that wanted the benefits of a sport like jogging but without the problems associated with it. After learning about the history and the different types of poles, members were keen to try out their technique- which wasn’t as easy as it looked at first. Soon though, quite a few members were strutting their stuff around the village hall! With an increase in energy consumption of around 46% compared to walking without poles, this proved to be a great way to get fit and a tutored walk was planned outside when the weather is warmer.

Janet has been a much loved President bringing her wonderful sense of humour and wit to every meeting. Grateful members thanked her for her dedication and hard work at their November AGM and presented her with flowers and a gift.
Springbrook & Scraptoft WI combined their Christmas Party with their Centenary Year Party. Champagne (Lambrini and Shloer) was served to the invited guests who were dressed in elegant gowns, furs and jewellery. Celebrity guests included Marilyn Monroe, Charlie Chaplin, Olivia Newton-John, Dame Edna and not least George Clooney. The categories for Star and Oscar nominations were fanciest tights, hats, scarves, glitz, gloves, best dressed and a few more. A vote was taken on the nominees for each category. The winners, with lots of laughter and much applause were presented with their own Stars and Oscars. A delicious buffet was served and then, who should arrive but James Bond, alias Daniel Craig, to present bouquets to Steph Lewis and Angie Massey who had worked so hard organising this memorable and so enjoyable a night to bring a fitting finale to the WI Centenary Year.
