Leire

Leire WI was treated to an evening of Morris dancing with the Bare Bones Border Morris LeireDancers from Loughborough, aptly named as they adapt the bare bones of traditional Welsh border dances to their own creations accompanied by our local historian and musician John Goodacre on the English bagpipes. With their ragged bright coloured costumes and daubed faces, they were very entertaining and following a talk and demonstration, members thoroughly enjoyed having a go at this brash and energetic dance with much clashing of sticks. It was a great workout

LeireOur Leire WI Christmas bring and share meal is always a great opportunity to get together, relax and chat, and this year, for the best wrapped Christmas present competition, we embraced the challenge of using  recyclable or reusable materials. Everyone made a great effort and the results  were so creative and attractive it was difficult to choose a winner. We are already thinking of next year’s challenge to include handmade recyclable crackers! We also enjoyed making origami Christmas trees to decorate our “Forestree” for the Christmas tree festival at Leire Village Church.

Members of Leire WI had recently been to see Mack and Mabel at the Concordia Theatre in Hinckley and all agreed that it was a very slick performance, considering the actors are amateurs, which included many well-known songs.

The March meeting then welcomed the Cocktail Shaker Boys (thankfully not strippers); Andy and Steve have been in business together for 8 years providing cocktails in your own home or chosen venue; this was their 26thWI presentation.  They gave us a brief history, including the fact that Prohibition got cocktails going when Americans needed flavours to mask their homemade spirits.  In true Blue Peter fashion there were some that had been prepared earlier for us to taste after being reminded that they are easy to drink until you try to stand up!  For those of us that were driving there were “mocktails” the non-alcoholic version.  All in all an enjoyable evening.

At the February meeting ofLeire WI President Margaret Smith presented long-serving member June Goodwin with the trophy for the most points in monthly competitions for the past year.

We were then pleased to welcome Gary Metcalf from Gemini Wealth Management who talked to us about protecting our assets in retirement, ie: keeping YOUR money in YOUR family. This is particularly important as it seems that 80% of wills are incorrectly drawn up and therefore invalid.  We were given advice to ensure that theRight Moneygoes to theRight Peopleat theRight Time.

Apparently (and rather worryingly given the age range of our WI), the highest divorce rate is in the 60-80 age range so we were told that it’s a good idea to leave money in a trust fund in case your partner re-marries (and most men do) meaning that any money could potentially be lost to your children.  However, it was reassuring to be told that we are all likely to live longer and that by 2051 there are expected to be 250 000 centenarians!
